Purpose

To encourage aggressive defensive play while allowing offense to practice hits

Setup

  • Three hitting lines and a setter on one side
  • One defender on opposite side, may start where ever they prefer on the court
  • Coach tossing balls to setter

How it works

  • The coach tosses balls one at a time to the setter who sets to any of their hitters
  • The hitter hits the ball trying to keep it away from the defender
  • The defender must touch ten balls before rotating out

Notes

  • For less advanced players, you can use two defenders instead of one
  • You can reduce the number of touches for less advanced players
  • Encourage the defensive player to “read the hitter” and adjust their position accordingly
