Purpose

This activity helps players understand how to pursue a poorly passed ball and return the ball over the net.

Setup

  • Position 2 players in the back row.
  • Position the remaining players around the court to help shag balls

How it works

  • Coach tosses a ball high and away from the court, mimicking a poorly passed first ball that must be retrieved
  • The closest player pursues the ball and attempts to pass it back toward the middle of the court
  • The second player then passes the ball over the net
  • After 5-6 balls, rotate two new players onto the court and repeat

Coaching Tips

  • Emphasize the importance of passing the ball high and using legs and core to gain power on the passes.
  • Emphasize that the second player should position themselves in an area of the court where the first player’s pass is likely to go.
