Basic Sets
Basics sets are used by teams and setters without the experience to run more sophisticated sets.
4: A high set to just inside the left antenna (when facing the net) for an outside hitter.
2: A medium high set in the center of the net for a middle hitter.
Intermediate and Advanced Sets
1: A quick, low set allowing the hitter to jump and attack the ball before the blockers can react. 1s are usually for a middle hitter.
3: A high set between the middle hitter and outside hitter. 3s are usually for an outside hitter.
5: A high set just outside the left antenna for an outside hitter.
6: A fast, low set (similar to a 1) to the right (and thus usually behind) of the setter for a middle or right side hitter.
10: A high set to the back row for a back row hitter.
9: A high set to the right antenna for a right side hitter.
Shoot: A fast, low set to the left antenna for an outside hitter. Shoots are similar to 4s but lower and faster.
Slide: A set to an attacker who runs behind the setter and jumps off of one foot.
A: A back row set to the left side of the court.
B (Pipe): A back row set to the middle of the court.
C : A back row set to the right side of the court.
