Purpose

This drill helps new player develop proper hitting form and ball control for overhand serving and attacking.

Setup

  • Pair up (if uneven, one group can have 3 players). Give each pair a ball.
  • Have each pair spread out on the court.

How it works

  • The coach should first demonstrate a proper toss and proper hitting form
  • One player tosses the ball a few feet in the air with their dominant hand and then hits it to their partner who catches it.
  • The partner then repeats.

Coaching Tips

  • Emphasize the importance of a good toss and of using proper hitting form (bow and arrow).
  • As players advance in this skill, ask them to aim hits at their partners head or chest to demonstrate even more ball control.
  • This activity can also be used as a warmup for intermediate players.
