Purpose

To improve setting skills by getting lots of touches.

Setup

  • Divide players into two groups.
  • Line one group up along the net facing away from the net.
  • The second group of players forms a single file line just behind the 10-foot line at the side of the court. Give each of these players a ball.

How it works

  1. The first player from the side line moves onto the court and tosses the ball to the first player at the net
  2. The player at the net sets the ball back to the first player
  3. The first player then moves down the line and repeats their toss to each player at the net
  4. The second player from the side line moves onto the court and follows the first player down the line
  5. After each player makes their way down the line, they rejoin the line along the sideline and repeats the process
  6. Once each player from the sideline has moved through the drill 2-3 times, have the two groups switch places and repeat the drill

Coaching Tips

  • This gives each player several opportunities to practice the set
  • Since some players are better tossers than others, this gives each setter a chance to receive a toss from several different players
