Purpose

This drill forces players to change their approach on the fly and encourages the development of ball control.

Setup

  • Place a third antenna at the mid-point of the net.
  • Position 2 players on each side of the antenna on each side of the court (4 players total).
  • Have the remaining players stand out of bounds ready to join the drill.

How it works

  • Players on the left side (or right) of the court play a short court game in which the 10′ line is considered the back out-of-bounds line and the center antenna is considered the side out-of-bounds line. If the serving team wins the point, they move to the other side of the net and 2 new players enter the court to serve. If the receiving team wins the point, they stay on the court. The losing players move to wait their turn to join the narrow court game.
  • Players on the right side (or left) of the court play a narrow court game in which the center antenna is considered the out-of-bounds line. If the serving team wins the point, they move to the other side of the net and 2 new players enter the court to serve. If the receiving team wins the point, they stay on the court. The losing players move to wait their turn to join the short court game.

Coaching Tips

  • You can also have teams play best 2-out-3 before leaving the court.
  • Emphasize the importance of controlling placement. Players will find that attacking on the short court is difficult and that clever tips and ball placement is often a better strategy. Players will find that alternating short and deep balls is an effective strategy on the narrow court where 2 players have trouble covering the entire depth of the court.
